Physical Activity Resources from Moving Medicine

Moving Medicine Launches Physical Activity Resources on Anxiety, Type 1 Diabetes, Obesity, and Menopause

Moving Medicine have launched four new resources designed to help healthcare professionals have better conversations about physical activity with people suffering from anxiety, people with type 1 diabetes, people who are obese, and people experiencing menopause.

The free online consultation guides cover the main benefits of physical activity, as well as addressing common barriers that healthcare professionals encounter when talking to people about becoming more active and offering support and ideas on how to navigate them.

Moving Medicine is an initiative from the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine UK (FSEM UK), developed in partnership with OHID, National Lottery and Sport England alongside other partners. Moving Medicine resources are built in an award-winning behavioural change framework and contain conversation guides – ranging from one, five and more minutes – that can be used by healthcare professionals to provide clear and consistent messaging about the benefits of physical activity.

We know that exercise can have a beneficial effort on both our physical and mental health, but many health professionals say they do not have the training or experience to talk about moving more. We also know that healthcare professionals can play a leading role in supporting patients who are struggling to keep active, with one in four people stating that they would be more active if they were advised by a healthcare professional.

Moving Medicine resources aim to bridge that gap by providing clinicians with all the tools they need to have quick, effective conversations about getting active.

Dr Natasha Jones, FSEM President and Moving Medicine Clinical Lead, said: “We know just how beneficial physical activity can be, particularly for those with long-term conditions or complex health issues. These consultation guides are designed to empower health professionals with the tools they need to provide personalised advice on getting and staying active that works for patients and their families.”

The new resources join the existing range of condition-specific conversation guides available at www.movingmedicine.ac.uk.
