The Handling of People 7th edition (HOP7) is now available. With over ten years passing since the 6th edition, it is a long-awaited publication for those working in both emergency and non-emergency healthcare settings.
As a charity with no government funding, BackCare wants to thank those who helped sponsor it, and importantly the editorial team and co-authors who did an amazing job. They adopted an inclusive, cross-professional approach to scoping and synthesising the shape and outline content of the publication with input from a very wide range of contributors and peer reviewers. This includes the implementation of an extensive and robust peer review process.
Everyone at BackCare is confident that this 7th edition represents the current and continually evolving consensus around evidence-based and person-centred best practice in the field of moving and handling people in health and social care.
This 7th edition reflects a broad professional input and consensus and therefore remains an essential guide for all those involved in delivering person-centred care involving moving and handling, including positioning, facilitation, enablement, and rehabilitation based on competent risk assessment and balanced decision-making.
Substantial changes in this new edition are reflected in the updated and restructured sections, perhaps most recognisable in the re-formatted, user-friendly practical section in which each task is explained in a consistent format including:
- context and reasoning (with extensive reference to published evidence)
- person ability
- methods and variations
- precautions and consideration.
Other key introductions are case examples throughout the text but also in Chapter 6, which consists entirely of real-world case studies at both systems and individual level, which share the contributor’s process of risk assessment and solutions synthesis.
Finally, a major resource and key benefit is that this is the first edition of the Handling of People where many of the practical illustrations and graphics used within the publication will be made available via a downloadable digital assets package through an annual licence option.
‘As a small charity we are committed to help prevent avoidable back injury for both care givers and the receivers of care in all settings, and this publication plays a valuable role in this. After such a long wait we are delighted that is now available on general sale,’ says Denice Logan Rose, Executive Director, BackCare.
