Impactful learning at the NOA Annual Members’ Conference

The second annual, CPD-certified NOA Annual Members’ Conference was held in Birmingham on 19 October 2022. It was an impactful learning and networking opportunity for the orthopaedic community with over 100 guests in attendance.

NHS England Spinal MRI leaflets published

Two new leaflets, one for clinicians and another for patients, which aim to reduce unwarranted variation in requests for MRI scans for spinal conditions are now available from NHS England.

Developed by spinal clinicians in collaboration with lived experience partners and stakeholders, the leaflets support both patients and clinicians when considering whether an MRI scan is appropriate and interpreting the scan report.

The patient leaflet can be shared with patients before or during their MRI scan appointment and radiology departments may also wish to link to the advice leaflet on the spinal MRI report.

Managing chronic pain in primary care webinar

Managing chronic pain can be one of the most difficult aspects of primary care for both doctors and patients. This trainer led short course looks at the NICE chronic primary pain guidelines and ways to put these into practice.

This webinar will cover:

  • An outline of the NICE guidelines and what they mean for the doctor and patient

Our annual lecture 2022 was given by Liz Lingard Delivery Partner, System Improvement, NHS England (North East & Yorkshire) followed by a panel discussion with Asim Suleman, GPwER Pain Management, and Jane Taylor, who was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis aged 26 and is an ARMA trustee.

MSK Toolkit supporting adolescents and young adults launched

The Musculoskeletal (MSK) Health Toolkit for employers and further education institutions – how to support adolescents and young adults to a better future has been launched.

There are two main aims of the toolkit:

  • To help employers and FE institutions understand the part they play in preventing MSK conditions;
  • To set out how they can support young people with chronic MSK conditions to realise their potential, thrive and remain in work or education.

The toolkit was developed in collaboration with the British Society for  Rheumatology and the Society of Occupational Medicine alongside clinical experts, patient representative groups, college and university representatives and adolescents and young people themselves.…

Versus Arthritis Cost-of-living crisis

On World Arthritis Day, Versus Arthritis sought to shine a light on the crisis people with arthritis are facing this winter — by calling on the Prime Minister to take urgent action to protect them. 

In September, Versus Arthritis surveyed almost 4,000 people with arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions to ask how the cost-of-living crisis was affecting them, and the results were staggering: 94% of people saying that cold weather has a negative impact on their condition, but 84% are using less fuel because of rising costs.…

RSPH awards for Good Boost

Swim England and Good Boost won two honours in the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) Awards for their Water Wellbeing programme.

The organisations were announced as winners of the Community Health Development category, followed by the Public Health Minister’s Award which is chosen from the winners of each category.

The Water Wellbeing programme focuses on improving MSK community services in swimming pools, helping make them more inclusive, accessible, and welcoming. The recognition highlights the importance of the programme in improving health and wellbeing in aquatic spaces and the value of data and measurement in delivery, read more here.

NRAS Leicester Mela Event

NRAS was proud to host the first Rheumatoid Arthritis Mela tailored for the South Asian community, which took place at Leicester Racecourse on the 13th October 2022.

The event had a great representation of healthcare professionals and specialists from the South Asian community who kindly gave their time to share their expertise on the day.

The feedback from those attending found the event incredibly beneficial for their needs.

As with many events that are the first of their kind there has been some great learning that NRAS will take away, which will allow the organisation to better understand how to deliver these types of events for the community in the future.…
