A future where no one sees community MSK services as a low priority

by Sue Brown, CEO ARMA

The King’s Fund has just published the results of the British Social Attitudes Survey (BSAR) questions on satisfaction with the NHS. Satisfaction has dropped by 17 percentage points since last year’s survey, with more people now being dissatisfied than satisfied with the NHS. The main reasons are waiting times (for GPs and hospital appointments), staff shortages and that the government does not spend enough money on the NHS. No one with any connection to health services will be surprised by any of this.

The survey asked about satisfaction with different services, including GPs, A&E, inpatient care, outpatients, and dentistry. There is one area of NHS provision which is missing, and in MSK arguably the most important – community services. The vast majority of those with an MSK condition will not need hospital treatment. Even those who do, need community MSK services too.

Guest blog: Why we’re talking about strength

Why we’re talking about strength
by Karen Middleton, chief executive of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy

The chief medical officer’s recommendation to strengthen on at least two days of the week is sometimes referred to as ‘the forgotten guideline’. It is frequently overlooked in favour of its more aerobic activity-based cousin, not least by healthcare professionals. As a consequence, too few people meet the guideline despite it being critical for quality of life and particularly for people living with a long-term condition.

The pandemic, which brought high levels of inactivity during lockdowns and other changes in behaviour, has exacerbated what is becoming known in healthcare circles as ‘the deconditioning challenge’.

Health equality: Equity and endurance

The King's Fund recently published Equity and endurance: how can we tackle health inequalities this time? The case for tackling health inequalities is clear and overwhelming, it argues. Yet attempts to do so in recent decades have had mixed success, and none have translated into the enduring focus on addressing health inequalities that is needed.

ARMA chronic pain resources

Recently, ARMA published a suite of chronic pain resources to address the 15.5 million people and 81% of people with a musculoskeletal condition reporting being in chronic pain. Chronic (persistent or long-lasting or recurrent) pain is life-changing and can affect all parts of life. Chronic pain is linked to deprivation and health inequalities. For these reasons, chronic pain is important to the ARMA alliance of members.
ARMA members have collaborated to produce these resources:

ARMA Core Offer for pain

This sets out what ARMA believes should be available in every area for people living with long term pain. Most of this provision needs to be delivered locally, as close as possible to people. We believe that every local health body (ICS, Health Board or Health and Social Care Trust) should have a plan for how this will be delivered. Read the "Core Offer".

ARMA Chronic Pain Policy Position Paper

The policy position paper makes recommendations for chronic pain including that more community-based approaches to pain should be developed to meet the needs of people with chronic pain. Multidisciplinary, networked, personalised approaches to pain should be standard.
