One of the priorities identified by our members for 2021 was health inequalities. We’ve recently begun discussing how this relates to MSK and what ARMA and our members might be able to do. In the course of discussions, I’ve discovered a few things which have surprised and shocked me. For instance, some newly qualified MSK professionals are choosing not to work in the NHS because of the level of racism they have experienced in NHS settings. And people in areas of deprivation wait longer for joint replacement surgery than those in less deprived areas. …

The recently published NICE guidance re: chronic pain management has enjoyed a mixed reception. The purpose of the guidance is to improve the lives of people living with long term pain by improving the quality of pain management services across the NHS but many commentators, patient groups and national professional bodies have not been slow to criticise it, citing that implementation could lead to significant patient harm. So what does the guidance tell us that we didn’t already know?

School toolkit for hypermobility support
|
School toolkit launched to support pupils with hypermobility-related disorders
|
The Ehlers-Danlos Support UK (EDS UK) and the Hypermobility Syndromes Association (HMSA) have together launched an online toolkit for schools to support pupils with hypermobility-related disorders. The new website aims to provide school staff with simple information about symptomatic hypermobility and the Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) and how they may affect primary and secondary pupils at school. It emphasises that the conditions affect children and young people in different ways and often, simple, low-cost adjustments can make a big difference.…

New Bone Health Accreditation Scheme from ROS
|
The Royal Osteoporosis Society (ROS) has launched a new Bone Health Accreditation Scheme, which is aiming to help people to make good choices for their bones by displaying a ‘Bone Health Approved’ logo on products. A wide range of products and services can now apply to the use the logo on their packaging and marketing materials, including foods, beverages, supplements and living aids. ROS bone health experts will then assess the claims that a product is making about bone health, and once approved, organisations can use the logo to show that their product or service is good for bones.…

The COP proposes solution to foot surgery waiting lists
|
As the waiting lists continue to rise there are challenges in managing the surgical workload created from pausing services during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Foot and ankle complications arise in 30% of the population and surgical intervention can give an immediate solution to many as well as providing an alternative intervention for those receiving continued conservative care. Podiatric surgery has been established as a specialist service for over 40 years and can assist in providing a cost-effective solution for reducing elective foot surgery waiting times.…

New consumer research from the British Chiropractic Association (BCA) reveals that 52% of people across the UK are planning to use digital fitness solutions to stay fit and healthy as lockdown restrictions lift. Conducted with OnePoll, the research explored the step change in the habits and routines of 5000 people across the UK regarding their physical health and wellbeing beyond the immediate effects of the pandemic. Throughout its 95 years, the British Chiropractic Association (BCA) has taken the lead in both establishing chiropractic and shaping the profession in the UK. The Association’s direction has always been driven by the needs of the profession with a view to the future; always for the benefit of its practitioners and their patients. Post-viral fatigue after COVID
|
It is estimated that one in 10 people still have symptoms 12 weeks after falling ill with COVID-19. Experts at BASRAT have compiled this infographic to aid recovery from Long COVID and post-viral fatigue.
|
The infographic includes the latest knowledge and input from Graduate Sport Rehabilitators working with COVID patients. The content and terminology has been tailored to help patients and reinforce confidence that the fatigue they experience is manageable and treatable.

A new partnership between the Health Innovation Network (HIN) and Orthopaedic Research UK (ORUK) has secured the future of the award-winning ESCAPE-pain programme, which helps people with knee, hip and back pain.
