A few days ago the Chief Medical officer, Chris Whitty, published his report for 2023 entitled health in an ageing society. I’m sure many of you will immediately seek out the MSK related content, skimming straight to the section on early diagnosis of osteoporosis or the case studies on ESCAPE-pain and MSK hubs. However, those are not the bits I think are most important for us.

The big take away message for me is the section on multi-morbidity.

Edgar Stene 2024 Competition
|
|
|
Entries are open for the 2024 Edgar Stene Award!
|
The topic this year is: “Engaging with my national RMD organisation – how it enriched and changed the quality of my life.”
|
|
|
|
EULAR PARE Member Organisations invite people living with RMDs (minimum age of 18 years) in their respective countries to participate in the competition by writing and submitting an essay on the topic of the year. Essays should be original and not exceed two typewritten pages.
To be considered for the 2024 UK nomination to EULAR, please send your entries to projects@arma.uk.net by no later than 19th December 2023.

Core Skills in Musculoskeletal Care Workshop Wednesday 6th March 2024, 9-5pm Dunadry Hotel, Antrim
|
Versus Arthritis is excited to be heading to Northern Ireland in March 2024 to deliver a full day Core Skills in Musculoskeletal Care interactive session, providing practical, hands-on learning and the opportunity to come together with peers to share knowledge and problem solving. This course is accredited by the RCGP and endorsed by the British Society for Rheumatology.

ramble4rhuem walk exceeds its target
|
The Gloucestershire Arthritis Trust would like to congratulate those from the Gloucestershire NHS Rheumatology team who undertook a sponsored walk on Sunday 24th September 2023. Their successful “ramble4rhuem” campaign had the aim of supporting the Gloucestershire Arthritis Trust, who in turn support the Rheumatology nursing staff with Study Grants. The eight-strong team, which included a couple of Physiotherapists and a Consultant, undertook a 21-mile walk around the Stroud Five Valleys and raised £3,545 against their £2,000 target.

Airing Pain: Childhood Pain
|
The new edition of Airing Pain explores the relationship between childhood trauma and chronic pain in adolescence and adulthood. Episode 140 is about how early childhood experiences and trauma in formative years can cause changes on a structural and functional level in the brain that can predispose young people to pain alongside a wide range of health conditions.

The Handling of People is on general sale
|
The Handling of People 7th edition (HOP7) is now available. With over ten years passing since the 6th edition, it is a long-awaited publication for those working in both emergency and non-emergency healthcare settings. As a charity with no government funding, BackCare wants to thank those who helped sponsor it, and importantly the editorial team and co-authors who did an who did an amazing job.

Osteopaths and their work in public health
|
Daniel McCarthy, Professional Development Manager at the iO, has recently worked with the Royal Society for Public Health to promote the role of the osteopathic profession in public health matters. A resource has been created in the Allied Health Professions Hub; this new infographic illustrates how an osteopaths role integrates within public health, accompanied by a profession descriptor.

3rd Annual NOA Member’s Conference a success

The event, which attracted 130 attendees, provided a platform for the orthopaedic community to engage in insightful discussions, gain knowledge, and foster connections.

The Wales MSK Conference took place in Cardiff on World Arthritis Day, 12 October 2023. ARMA CEO Sue Brown presented alongside the Chief Medical Officer, Sir Frank Atherton and the Health Minister, Eluned Morganon.

The Minister and the CMO delivered speeches covering the scale of the challenge in terms of the number of people living with MSK in Wales – nearly a million – as well as the impact of the conditions on quality of life; both spoke about the importance of primary and secondary prevention regarding MSK.…

Chronic pain: What matters to you?
|
This research aims to better understand what it means to live with and manage chronic pain, from everyone's perspective. You now have the opportunity to say what matters to you by participating in this survey.
|
By answering the questionnaire, you can help overcome some of the current uncertainties and challenges of chronic pain management. Your knowledge will enable the researchers to collaborate closely with patients and patient organizations to develop better care that are meaningful for people living with chronic pain and their families.
