I have just finished facilitating one of our regional meetings bringing together stakeholders to talk about what’s happening at the local level with MSK services. It’s clear there is a lot of willingness to do something, despite a lot of confusion around who leads on MSK at an ICS level. A lot of questions were asked at the meeting. Where are the MSK targets being reported? Are the ICBs aware of what’s happening? We’ve got a case to introduce a Fracture Liaison Service, but how do we get anyone to listen? And practical suggestions such as the possibility of setting up an MSK community of practice.

ARMA is organising a series of meetings for people to discuss ways to improve MSK services in their local areas. Professionals, third sector representatives and people with lived experience of MSK are invited to come along and share thoughts and ideas.
What does each meeting aim to achieve?
  • Bring together a wide range of stakeholders with an interest in improving or transforming MSK services.
  • Share examples of improvement and transformation work happening in the region.
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration.
  • Identify any barriers to progress and consider ways to address these.
  • Consider the system – primary, community, secondary services and wider community aspects.
Upcoming meetings are scheduled for the following regions of England:

Government’s sports strategy highlights role of MSK Hubs

Empowering the next generation of MSK Innovators

Applications are now open for the MSK Innovation Accelerator programme, hosted by MedTech SuperConnector and part funded by Orthopaedic Research UK (ORUK). The programme is designed to accelerate the development of musculoskeletal innovation and thereby create and scale early-stage MSK ventures across the UK. It will involve a 6 month intensive learning journey, providing participants with entrepreneurship training, masterclasses and and access to expertise.

The government has announced ambitious plans to get an additional 3.5 million people physically active by 2030. The announcement was accompanied by the publication of a report, Get Active: A strategy for the future of sport and physical activity, which featured MSK Hubs as a case study of how sport and physical activity can help people ‘live healthier, longer and happier lives’.

Enhancing knowledge to aid a wider variety of patient populations

BASRaT launches neurological rehabilitation module

BASRaT has launched a neurological rehabilitation module to enable BASRaT registered Sport Rehabilitators to safely use their high-level exercise rehabilitation knowledge and skills with a wider variety of patient populations and to work more effectively as part of the overall healthcare team. Developed by specialist Physiotherapists and medical experts, this module is delivered online via an education portal for BASRaT registrants and has been added to the core curriculum for Sport Rehab students.

Outpatients Strategy Survey

The Patients Association is working with NHS England and the Royal College of Physicians in a collaborative effort to improve outpatient services. They are keen to hear from people who have recently experienced NHS outpatient services.
