Self-management and health inequalities
I’ve been talking a lot about self-management recently. We’ve had conflicting views through our MSK health inequalities inquiry – does it help address inequalities or exacerbate them?
It seems that it partly depends on what you mean by self-management. One of our lived experience partners said, “self-management is code for you’re on your own.” There is some suspicion amongst both people living with MSK conditions and health care professionals that this is the case, which can lead to resistance to uptake in the NHS. But there is more to it than that.

ARMA is organising a series of meetings for people to discuss ways to improve MSK services in their local areas. Professionals, third sector representatives and people with lived experience of MSK are invited to come along and share thoughts and ideas.
What does each meeting aim to achieve?
- Bring together a wide range of stakeholders with an interest in improving or transforming MSK services.
- Share examples of improvement and transformation work happening in the region.
- Identify opportunities for collaboration.
- Identify any barriers to progress and consider ways to address these.
- Consider the system – primary, community, secondary services and wider community aspects.
Upcoming meetings are scheduled for the following regions of England:

Social Media feedback hints and tips most welcome
We all have our “go to” social media sites, but which really work for charities in our sector? After deciding in September 2013 on a Twitter page that could be linked to their website, now some 3,800 tweets later, GAT would really like to hear from ARMA communications specialists on the best way to improve their tweets. Using the hashtag #makingadifference and the Twitter address @GlosArthritis, GAT’s Secretary Steve Morton can be reached at: steve@glosarthritistrust.org.

Axial SpA and Inflammatory Bowel Disease
In June, in collaboration with Crohn’s & Colitis UK, and with support from the British Society for Gastroenterology (BSG), NASS launched the findings from their landscape review into diagnosing axial SpA in people living with inflammatory bowel disease.
As part of the NASS Act on axial SpA campaign, lunched in June 2021, we developed a 22-question survey in conjunction with key clinical advisors, Crohn’s & Colitis UK and BSG. There are two major themes emerging from this analysis to help ensure swift recognition, identification, and referral of suspected axial SpA: education and joint working with rheumatology.…

RA-UK Regional Anaesthesia Research PSP
The RA-UK Regional Anaesthesia Research Priority Setting Partnership is a project aiming to establish the 10 most important research questions in regional anaesthesia. It’s vital that these questions matter to patients and healthcare professionals. If you completed the initial survey, RA-UK is grateful for your support. Over 500 research ideas were collected from a wide range of people. The team then generated indicative questions based on themes of the suggested questions and subsequently performed a literature search to establish which of these questions were already answered.

We know that many people value our newsletter, webinars and the fact that we provide a voice for MSK health. We are increasingly asked: given that our membership is made up of organisations, how can an individual support ARMA? For this reason, we have set up a new supporter scheme.
