Why ICBs must prioritise MSK (and what you can do to help)

by Sue Brown, CEO ARMA

My own local ICS, like many others, has the following ambition in its current strategic plan: “To eradicate the gap in healthy life expectancy between NECN ICS and the rest of the country”. The strategy contains one mention of improving access to MSK services and two local examples of work to achieve this. It’s not enough, and here’s why.

On 1 June, the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) published a report on understanding the drivers of healthy life expectancy. This shows just how important MSK is to that ambition to improve healthy life expectancy. I’m asking you all to help us drive home that message to every ICB.

Economic Growth and Increased Productivity: Boosting the MSK Health of the Working Nation

Economic Growth and Increased Productivity: Boosting the MSK Health of the Working Nation
Guest blog by Dr Arash Angadji, Chief Executive, Orthopaedic Research UK

The nation has a musculoskeletal (MSK) problem. As a society we have tended to focus on MSK issues relating to the ageing population, but the latest figures on the number of people not working in the UK due to long-term sickness (including poor MSK health) highlight how we need to start thinking of poor MSK health as a multi-generational challenge. The government has responded with a Call for Evidence, designed to capture a wide range of perspectives on the prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, and management of a range of serious health conditions including MSK disorders. Getting people back to work is central to its plans for economic growth.

NRAS Live: Remote Monitoring with King’s Improvement Science

Join NRAS on Wednesday 28th June 2023 for a discussion with King’s Improvement Science about their new remote monitoring system and how this may help the RA community.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease which causes pain and inflammation, affecting around 1% of the UK population. The traditional appointments system, with face-to-face appointments at fixed intervals, can mean that patients struggle to access care when they need it most – when they are having a ‘flare’, or increase in symptoms.
