Join a chorus of local voices for MSK
Integrated Care Boards have been in place for almost a year now. Over that year, we have seen the profile and status of MSK health rising at a national level. It is difficult to tell if that profile is reflected at an ICB level. If not, then all the national profile in the world won’t make a difference to people with MSK conditions. That’s why ARMA is making local MSK services a priority with a new project, and we need you to get involved.
The fact that the Major Conditions Strategy includes MSK as one of the six identified conditions should signal to ICBs the importance of MSK and the need to ensure it gets equal attention. A quick look at a random selection of ICB websites shows that the priority for MSK is variable. Some have MSK service plans easily identifiable. Most have little or no mention.

Community-Powered MSK: ARMA Annual Lecture 2023
More and more of us are living with long-term MSK conditions, putting increasing pressure on our already over-stretched NHS and local services. Is the current model unsustainable? And what does the future of MSK care look like?
These were questions explored in the well-attended 2023 ARMA Annual Lecture. We were delighted to welcome two leading experts in their fields, Adam Lent, Chief Executive of New Local, and Laura Finucane, Consultant Physiotherapist and Clinical Director of Sussex MSK Partnership, who shared their insights with a lively audience.
Adam gave an outline of New Local’s recent report, A Community-Powered NHS, which proposed a radical shift towards a healthcare system focused on preventing illness as much as treating it. Starting with rich descriptions of the current medical system, and real-world examples from the UK and abroad, he went on to advocate for a new model that put people in charge.
Drawing on her in-depth experience of front-line MSK care, Laura considered how this would work at a local level. She explained the need for a holistic approach, taking into consideration the fact that many patients with MSK experience a range of conditions and symptoms.
Treating MSK conditions in isolation can do patients a disservice, without addressing the root causes. There are already many great examples from the MSK community as to how this could work in practice, while this approach could benefit staff as much as patients.
This fascinating discussion implied that we could see a sea-change occurring, but it requires courage on the part of everyone involved. Not surprisingly, there was plenty of interaction from the audience, with many insightful questions as well as participants keen to share their own experience.
We would like to extend a big thank you to Adam, Laura, and event sponsors getUBetter as well as everyone who attended and helped to make this year’s lecture a success.

Second call for evidence – Local Services
When it comes to treatment and quality of life for people living with an MSK condition, it’s far from a level playing field.
Where you live, your income, gender, and ethnic background can all have an impact on MSK health. Sadly, deprivation is a significant driver of inequalities, with people in deprived areas more likely to have a long-term MSK condition. They also tend to experience more chronic pain, worse outcomes, and lower quality of life.
That is why ARMA is conducting the first ever national inquiry into MSK Health inequalities to explore and highlight these issues and make recommendations for improvement.
Local services play a key role in addressing these issues. In our first call for evidence, we heard insightful and thought-provoking responses from service providers throughout the length and breadth of the country.
We are now calling on more local service providers to respond and provide examples from their own experience. We are interested in any local attempts to address inequalities in MSK related to deprivation, even if you have not engaged in formal research.

We know that many people value our newsletter, webinars and the fact that we provide a voice for MSK health. We are increasingly asked: given that our membership is made up of organisations, how can an individual support ARMA? For this reason, we have set up a new supporter scheme.
