Making good MSK health for all a reality
I am writing this on International Women’s Day, thinking about the many different facets of inequalities in musculoskeletal health. Deprivation is one of the most significant drivers, which is why we have chosen to focus our inquiry on deprivation. However, we know there are other factors including ethnicity, age, sex and gender.
Women are disproportionately affected by MSK conditions: 35% of women compared with 28% of men experience an MSK condition, (Versus Arthritis). So I was pleased that the Women’s Health Ambassador recently organised a roundtable about the women’s health strategy for England and MSK health. Women’s higher risk of osteoporosis is an obvious example, but there is more to sex equality and MSK health than that.

Call for evidence into MSK Health Inequalities Inquiry closing soon!
The call for evidence in ARMA's Inquiry into MSK health inequalities is closing on Monday April 3rd! This is a crucial opportunity to share your insights and experiences and help shape the future of MSK healthcare in the UK.
The inquiry aims to explore and address the persistent inequalities in MSK healthcare outcomes and access across the country. Deprivation is a significant driver of inequalities in MSK health. People in deprived areas experience more chronic pain, are more likely to have a long term MSK condition and experience worse clinical outcomes and quality of life. We are therefore focusing this inquiry on MSK health inequalities and deprivation.
To ensure that the inquiry is comprehensive and effective, ARMA is inviting MSK professionals, people with lived experience, and advocates from all sectors to contribute their knowledge and perspectives. This includes clinicians, researchers, patient groups, charities, and policy makers, among many others.
Submitting evidence is easy and straightforward. Simply visit the ARMA website to find out more. Your contribution could help shape policy and practice around MSK health for years to come.
We encourage all MSK professionals and advocates to participate in this important inquiry and to share the call for evidence with their colleagues and networks.

Save the Date - ARMA lecture 2023
ARMA's 2023 Annual Lecture, entitled Community Powered MSK, is set to take place on Tuesday, May 16th at 6pm. The event will be virtual and feature two distinguished speakers: Adam Lent, the Chief Executive of New Local, and Laura Finucane, a Consultant Physiotherapist and Clinical Director of Sussex MSK Partnership.
With a growing number of people suffering from long-term MSK conditions, there is increasing pressure on services and lengthy backlogs, leading many to believe that our current models are unsustainable. The event will focus on whether a more community-centred approach could address the need for prevention, support for self-management, and de-medicalization of our approach to MSK health. Furthermore, the speakers will discuss whether this approach could be the answer to tackling the ever-increasing demand, and whether it could improve patient access, outcomes, and experiences.
Last year, New Local published a report titled "A Community Powered NHS," which proposed a radical shift towards a healthcare system focused on preventing illness as much as treating it. The report called for a collaborative approach with communities as equal partners in the design and delivery of healthcare. Adam Lent will discuss the principles of this new paradigm and the potential benefits, while Laura Finucane will respond from the perspective of local MSK services.
The event promises to be an insightful and thought-provoking discussion on the future of MSK healthcare. Details on how to register will be sent out shortly, so make sure to hold the date and stay tuned for more information.

We know that many people value our newsletter, webinars and the fact that we provide a voice for MSK health. We are increasingly asked: given that our membership is made up of organisations, how can an individual support ARMA? For this reason, we have set up a new supporter scheme.
