Arthritis Research UK Policy Seminar

Arthritis Research UK Policy Seminar on Personal Health Budgets

Chaired by Professor Alan Silman, Medical Director, Arthritis Research UK, the seminar will focus on how any future implementation of personal health budgets may affect the clinical encounter, particularly in the context of musculoskeletal conditions, including inflammatory arthritis, osteoarthritis, back pain and multi-system autoimmune diseases. If the independent evaluation does recommend the roll-out of personal health budgets, Arthritis Research UK is keen to ensure that future implementation takes into account the needs of people living with musculoskeletal conditions.

Following this event, ARUK will be publishing a report based on findings from our personal health budgets survey, our one-day workshop held at the Department of Health in December, and key discussions from this seminar. We intend to publish our report in July 2012.

The objective of the seminar is to explore in more depth with stakeholders from health and social care:

  • What would be the information needs for people with musculoskeletal conditions holding a personal health budget?
  • What would be the education and training needs for clinicians supporting patients with personal health budgets in pilot areas?
  • How should those information and education needs be met?

ARUK are also keen to explore with you the following themes:

  • What information and support do people need to develop their care plan and manage their own budget? What is the different support roles played in the pilot areas? What has been the impact on patients and on charities?
  • How should clinicians in primary and specialist care relate to personal health budgets and patients that may have them? Are there any particular groups that should be encouraged or discouraged from taking them on? What are the implications for professionalism, clinical risk management and patient safety? How will clinicians learn the skills needed to support patients who take on a personal health budget? Who is best placed to do this work, and who retains clinical responsibility?

Timing: 1.30pm lunch and networking, 2.15pm – 4.15pm seminar,

Thursday, 24th May 2012

Venue: Wellcome Collection conference centre, Euston Road (across the road from Euston station)
