ARMA Newsletter January 2022
We all look forward to 2022 with some trepidation. We don’t know how much impact Omicron will have on the NHS, the population, and our own families. 2021 was a year of challenge and also of incredible achievements. A vaccination programme which has now provided all adults with the opportunity for three doses, four in some cases; which has delivered boosters to three quarters of the eligible population; which delivered 1.6 million boosters in the final week of the year. None of this just happened. It was a success because of people who worked on Christmas day to deliver vaccinations, who volunteered in vaccination centres on top of their day jobs, who dropped everything to rapidly scale up the programme at a moment’s notice.

Working in partnership to reduce inequalities in MSK health
Guest blog by Adanna Williams, BestMSK Health Collaborative, Deputy Director
This week many of us are returning to work or starting our first week of 2022 having had a difficult Christmas period supporting and delivering services. I am mindful that the impact of focusing efforts to combat the Omicron variant has the potential to widen health inequalities. I have acknowledged how challenging this can be for those who need to access our services and those who are awaiting interventions.
In the BestMSK Healthcare Collaborative programme (an NHS England and Improvement programme), equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) continues to be a key priority. We are committed to investigating and understanding all the groups most at risk of health inequalities who need our services. We are using a population health management approach and developing regional MSK networks to achieve this. This way we can understand areas that are working well and those to prioritise for improvement.

ARMA publishes health equalities roundtable report
ARMA published a report on health equalities following a roundtable event. The report highlights solutions and recommendations focussed on MSK health equalities. It is well known that the prevalence and impact of musculoskeletal conditions are not experienced equally across the population. Musculoskeletal conditions are linked to deprivation, age, are more prevalent in women, and disproportionately affect some ethnic groups.

ARMA publishes chronic pain resources
Last month ARMA published a suite of chronic pain resources to address the 15.5 million people and 81% of people with a musculoskeletal condition reporting being in chronic pain. Chronic (persistent or long-lasting or recurrent) pain is life-changing and can affect all parts of life. Chronic pain is linked to deprivation and health inequalities. For these reasons, chronic pain is important to the ARMA alliance of members.
ARMA members have collaborated to produce these resources:
This sets out what ARMA believes should be available in every area for people living with long term pain. Most of this provision needs to be delivered locally, as close as possible to people. We believe that every local health body (ICS, Health Board or Health and Social Care Trust) should have a plan for how this will be delivered. Read the "Core Offer".
ARMA Chronic Pain Policy Position Paper
The policy position paper makes recommendations for chronic pain including that more community-based approaches to pain should be developed to meet the needs of people with chronic pain. Multidisciplinary, networked, personalised approaches to pain should be standard.

APPG for Osteoporosis and Bone Health Inquiry Report
The All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Osteoporosis and Bone Health published a report into the long-standing postcode lottery in the NHS for osteoporosis care. The report highlights the scale of under-diagnosis, under-treatment and missed opportunities in the NHS, with a blueprint for change. Implementation of the blueprint in England and Wales could save the NHS around £287m over five years – a return on investment of around 3:1 – according to the Royal Osteoporosis Society (ROS), which has supported the Inquiry. The report highlights the deep inequalities for access to a Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) …

NOA Webinar: COVID Orthopaedic Recovery: National and International recruitment
The first National Orthopaedic Alliance webinar for 2022 will look at national and international recruitment. Probably the biggest issue impeding orthopaedic surgery recovery is staffing. Many members of staff have left the NHS, retired early or have long term medical and/or mental health issues that limit their ability to work.

We know that many people value our newsletter, webinars and the fact that we provide a voice for MSK health. We are increasingly asked: given that our membership is made up of organisations, how can an individual support ARMA? For this reason, we have set up a new supporter scheme.
