Social prescribing – a vital role in MSK health

CEO update: Promoting MSK health
This month I have been working on a resource for social prescribing link workers which ARMA plans to publish in the autumn. It’s made me reflect on what a valuable role link workers can play in MSK health. We know that many people with MSK conditions need support with their mental health or have become lonely or isolated as result of their condition. Added to this they may have other conditions which are harder to manage as a result of their MSK health.
Link workers can help with all these issues.

Working in partnership with patients to extend the benefits of pain management programmes

Working in partnership with patients to extend the benefits of pain management programmes
Guest blog by Dr Michelle Farr, Research Fellow at University of Bristol and the National Institute for Health Research Applied Research Collaboration West (NIHR ARC West)

People who experience long-term pain have important insights and strategies that help them manage pain in everyday life. However, they are often not invited to share their knowledge and skills to inform the services that are meant to support them. ARMA has been highlighting the importance of working in partnership with patients and how co-production, where patients and professionals work together, can improve pain services.

ARMA virtual conference 2021

Monday 6 December 2021
Following the success of our virtual conference last year, we will be running this one day event online.

Musculoskeletal (MSK) services were not realising their potential before the pandemic. As we begin to recover services we have a chance not to go back, but forward to a new way of working – integrated, co-produced, effective. The new NHS England BestMSK Health programme and the planned changes to the NHS give us an opportunity to think differently about how we work across systems to improve the MSK health of the population.

Join us in December to hear from some great speakers including the Personalised Care Manager, North of England, NHSE/I, the Chief Operating Officer of Barking & Dagenham’s GP Federation and the Head of MSK Together, Mid Notts ICP. Hear how they are all thinking differently and leading MSK services in new directions.

Impacts of COVID-19 on deconditioning and falls

Impacts of COVID-19 on deconditioning and falls

Public Health England has published a report on the wider impacts of COVID-19 on physical activity, deconditioning and falls in older adults.

The study modelled the likely effect of the decrease in strength and balance activity observed during the pandemic on people who experience a fall, the number of falls and associated health and social care costs.

Some of the key findings were: 32% of older people were inactive between March to May 2020; this has increased from 27% in the corresponding period in 2019; average duration of strength and balance activity decreased from 126 to 77 minutes per week.

New app for virtual group exercise classes

The pandemic has led to a backlog of people, primarily over 50s, who are in need of support to manage their condition due to a combination of physical inactivity and limited access to non-emergency appointments. Those living with MSK conditions can find it challenging to exercise due to pain, fear of injury and low motivation. However physical activity can help to alleviate symptoms and improve mental health. The VCR project, running for twelve months, will be offering support to people in the form of peer-led, virtual group exercise classes delivered via a mobile app.
