If it doesn’t work for patients it doesn’t work
Covid-19 has brought out some amazing collaboration in MSK. Different parts of the system have been affected in different ways – the issues restarting surgery are enormous, there is a backlog of people who need to see a rheumatologist, large numbers of staff from community services redeployed into covid wards and are now returning to their previous roles.
In the middle of all this have been patients, struggling to navigate a system in chaos. Unable to get treatment, planned surgery delayed, people in pain wondering when they might be seen. There have also been patients discovering new ways to access services, wondering why they were never offered on line pain management groups or treatment at home before.

How do you make care person-centred for the child and family?
Guest blog by Nina Davies, Project Lead: Integrating Long Term Condition Training and Development, Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust; Co-Chair Children’s Podiatry Special Advisory Group, The College of Podiatry
Person-centred care (‘person first’ or ‘child and family centred care’) is a term to reflect treating the whole person, encompassing physical, mental and social wellness, environment and personal circumstances. It is an approach which looks beyond the symptoms of a disease and aims to meet the person’s needs and priorities before those of the system or a professional. It forms a basis for goal based care. Everyone working in health and social care organisations has a responsibility to help ensure services are as person-centred as possible…

ARMA welcomes the Psoriasis Association
ARMA is happy to extend a warm welcome to the Psoriasis Association, our newest member.
The Psoriasis Association offers information and support in a variety of ways to people whose lives are affected by psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis; patients, relatives, friends, healthcare professionals and the general public.
Founded in 1968, the Psoriasis Association has always recognised and promoted the value of multi-disciplinary teams when treating both psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. They regularly contribute to appraisals and guidelines for NICE and the SMC. The Psoriasis Association funds, collaborates and supports cutting-edge research to increase the understanding of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis in addition to improving the experiences and advance the treatments for those affected by these conditions.

Shielding update and factsheet
The government has announced a relaxation of the guidance to people in England who are clinically extremely vulnerable and therefore were advised to shield. (At the time of writing, guidance in the other nations had not changed). The chance of encountering coronavirus in the community has fallen: less than 1 in 1,700 are now estimated to have the virus, down from 1 in 500 four weeks ago. Whilst the relaxation is good news for many people who have gone months without leaving their houses, ARMA remains concerned that important protections are being lifted too soon.…

What are the experiences of ethnic minorities with pain management?
An invitation to participate in research: your experiences of living with pain in London
Recent findings have shown that chronic pain affects up to 50% of the UK population. Of this, Black adults have been found to have higher levels of “high-impact” pain in comparison to their White counterparts. This disparity in the incidence of pain is also reflected in the contributory factors to pain. Researchers have found many factors that are associated with the development of chronic pain including comorbidity, mental health and employment status – factors that are more prevalent in ethnic minorities…

What questions would you like to see answered by psoriatic arthritis research?
The British Psoriatic Arthritis Consortium is working with the James Lind Alliance to run a priority setting partnership (PSP). The aim is to create a national top-10 list of research priorities for psoriatic arthritis. They want ideas and thoughts from people with different experiences and backgrounds: those with psoriatic arthritis, their families, carers and clinicians.
This is your chance to make sure research addresses questions about psoriatic arthritis that are important to you. The survey results will be used to help prioritise funding for research in the future.
