Challenges and collaboration - progress for MSK in 2020

CEO update - Working together
Alongside the pain and misery of the Covid-19 pandemic there have also been some beneficial side effects – quiet streets and skies, birdsong, less pollution. This is also true in the world of MSK. ARMA has been a champion for the NHS Change Challenge, a project to identify the new and innovative ways of working that have been rapidly developed across the NHS and to ensure beneficial changes are captured and locked in. I think it is no accident that NHS Improvement chose to pilot this in MSK. The way in which the MSK sector has come together to collaborate and lead the changes needed to respond to the crisis has been outstanding.…

Guest blog: The changing landscape of orthopaedic services in light of the COVID-19 pandemic

Guest-Cormac-Kelly
Guest-Peter-Kay-1
by Cormac Kelly, Consultant Upper Limb Surgeon at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
and
Peter Kay, National Orthopaedic Alliance (NOA) Lead Clinician and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

The COVID-19 crisis has changed the delivery of planned orthopaedic surgery drastically. As the pandemic continues to subside, the NHS, with various guidance from Public Health England, Medical and Surgical Colleges, the British Orthopaedic Association, and others, is working on a plan to get surgery back on track.
The information on the risks to patients and staff when operating during this crisis continues to emerge. In light of research from around the world indicating an increase in complication rates and mortality if patients contract COVID-19 around the time of surgical intervention, we are taking every precaution possible to develop processes to reduce the risk to our patients…

Changes to shielding guidance

The shielding guidance has changed so that from 1 June 2020 people who are shielding are advised that they may go outside once per day following strict social distancing. No other aspect of the guidance has changed, so people are still advised that they should remain 2 metres away from other members of their household, minimise the time spent in shared spaces, etc. Some people with MSK conditions are shielding, either because of the combination of medication they are taking or because they have other conditions that make them extremely vulnerable. Please note that the people advised to shield have a specific set of conditions; being over 70 alone does not put you in this group.
The guidance is advisory, so people do not have to follow it, and those who wish to remain inside can do so. The support available to people who are shielding, such as food deliveries remain in place. People who are shielding can still be placed on furlough if eligible or claim statutory sick pay.
The full guidance can be found in the Government’s publications.

Key coronavirus MSK resources

The coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic is a fast-moving situation. There is a plethora of guidance available. ARMA is responding, coordinating directly with NHSE and alliance members on key advice and issues.

ARMA has created a webpage for coronavirus (Covid-19) designed to provide easy access to the most relevant NHS resources and musculoskeletal guidance documents. This document is live and we are reviewing and updating it regularly, as appropriate.

Visit our Coronavirus info webpage.
We are providing regular updates to our members via Zoom meetings, email and on our social media channels, too.

Paediatric Rheumatology – Coronavirus webinar

The needs of children with inflammation/pain and their families in the context of coronavirus

Friday 5 June 2020, 12.30 – 1.30pm
The last month has seen a lot of focus on immediate responses to the coronavirus outbreak – assessing a patient's risk in relation to the virus; which services can be suspended and which need to continue; how to deliver online appointments. What are the differences when considering children and their families in a healthcare setting at this and other times?
In this webinar a parent, rheumatologist and specialist nurse discuss these issues and how services might best respond.
The webinar is aimed at anyone working with paediatric rheumatology patients including rheumatologists, nurses, physiotherapists, paediatricians, GPs, and managers of paediatric services.
It is for those who want to explore approaches, ideas, dilemmas and solutions and learn how we can make sure we hear the paediatric voice in these unprecedented times.
Register here.
