Do one thing to prioritise MSK health
|
|
|
We are now very close to Bone and Joint Week, which begins on 12 October. It’s a chance to remind everyone of the fundamental importance of MSK health. Today I learned that there is some evidence that people with hip and knee arthritis who don’t receive treatment may die early due to cardiovascular conditions. It makes sense. If you are in too much pain to be active your general health will suffer. Add to this the impact of depression, isolation and loneliness, all of which also affects physical health. So, whilst the pain of the condition may not be fatal, the knock-on effects can be.

Guest blog: Social prescribing - connecting people with communities

Twelve years ago I was working for a charity just north of Kings Cross. My office looked out on a derelict area of forgotten buildings and toxic land. Over the next 10 years, things gradually changed as the infrastructure was renewed: old buildings were renovated and new spaces and buildings were created for people and communities to visit, use and inhabit. Now, where there was wasteland, parents watch their children play in the Granary Square fountains. It’s a terrific example of well-designed development infrastructure providing a framework that enables life, community and wellbeing to flourish.

Guest blog: Rethinking activity and movement in care homes

I was thrilled to read Sue Brown’s September blog and the proposed plan for an event on physical activity. The importance and benefits of staying active is already widely accepted and understood in terms of maintaining joint movement, bone and muscle strength and this is especially important for residents living in care homes. The challenge for care is to create opportunities for people with a wide variety and often multiple and complex health needs such as musculoskeletal, limited or a lack of mobility and living with dementia to keep engaged and active.

Webinar - The NHS Long Term Plan and rheumatoid arthritis: addressing unmet need
|

Whilst care for the over 400,000 people diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has improved over recent years, there are still high levels of unmet need and patients not receiving optimal treatment and support.
|
|
Effective implementation of the NHS Long Term Plan should lead to improved care for people with RA. Better patient access to evidence-based treatment, access to multidisciplinary teams in the community, shared decision making, self-management and mental health support all form part of the picture.
|
- Where inflammatory arthritis and RA fit with the NHS Long Term Plan.
- Why early access to therapies to prevent disease progression is important.
- The importance of peer support, self-management support and integrated services and what patient groups have to offer.
|
Commissioners and service transformation leads working on MSK pathways, development of community services, and interface between primary and secondary care. PCN and CCG leads on social prescribing, shared decision-making and self-management support. Clinicians in any setting who see patients with RA.
|

- Do you know how to make your services accessible to people with MSK conditions?
- Are your staff members confident to support someone in pain to exercise?
- Do they understand how being more active benefits people’s mobility and can reduce pain?
|
If the answer to any of the above is ‘no,’ then you may be turning away valuable customers when you could be helping them to improve their health. This event will help you to change this.

New chair-based exercises for people with arthritis
|
|
Arthritis Action has launched a new webpage featuring arthritis-friendly exercises using animated images. These chair-based strength and conditioning exercises were developed in partnership with wellbeing organisation Oomph!, mobilising different parts of the body. The exercises were designed with the aim to recondition and build mobility and confidence in people who have not been keeping active.

Measuring patient outcomes using PROMs
|
|
The Institute of Osteopathy has published a case study into the use of Patient Reported Outcome Measurement (PROMs) to measure patient outcomes after osteopathic care. There is a need for osteopaths to collect robust outcome data from their patients about the care provided, to allow reflection and promote good patient management.

New BOA guidance on F.R.I.
|
|
The BOA is pleased to launch its newest BOA Standard (BOAST) on ‘Fracture Related Infections’ (FRI). The BOA Trauma Group has produced this document, which is supported by the Orthopaedic Trauma Society and the British Limb Reconstruction Society. It is available online here.

The BOA Instructional Course was established to help trauma and orthopaedic (T&O) surgeons to establish strong foundations for practice and assessment. We provide the opportunity for a number of Case Based Discussions (CBDs) across a range of topics but also to network and attend lectures delivered by expert clinicians.

The late Edgar Stene, who had severe ankylosing spondylitis, was a great promoter of co-operation between doctors, patients and community workers. The EULAR Edgar Stene Prize Competition runs yearly in his memory and honour. First prize is € 1,000 and the winner will be invited to attend the EULAR Congress in Frankfurt.
